Week 1

What we did this week: (See workbook for details)

  • This week we brainstormed The broad topic of "inequality in NZ".
  • In our table groups we brainstormed inequality in "Education" specifically.
  • We had a big group discussion on all the topics.
  • I read the "inequality debate by Max Rashbrooke"
  • We analysed example posters "Set A" in our table group.
  • I also pulled by favourite posters from the two lectures and resources they gave me to analyse further.
  • Looked at the F.D.P's.
  • Looked at key terms.
Topics that sparked my interest from the research:
  • Stereotypical jobs for genders: Lack of encouragement to study certain fields, income difference, trouble with finding employment, hard to be accepted. eg. girls get encouraged to study things like nursing, teaching, child care, and thing to do with nurturing. Boys are often pushed to pursue trades, accounting, science, computer stuff.
  • Minimum Wage compared to living wage: Fulfillment of life rather than merely surviving, living up to potential.
  • "If your not part of the solution your part of the problem": passive doesn't help, speak up, ignorance by the rich, lack of empathy and understanding.
  • Animals: Pretty ones get adopted, old ones don't, to many get breed, bad conditions and fighting dogs, breed stereotypes.
From the posters i collected, i really enjoyed the ones that had raw mark making (expression of feelings, creates emotion, honesty) and the ones with graphic/striking photography.
